The most important shot

Master the Tennis Serve

The serve is the only shot in tennis where you have complete control — the ball starts in your hand. It's also the most technically complex shot in the game. A great serve wins free points, dictates rally patterns, and takes pressure off your groundstrokes. But it takes time to develop, because so many moving parts — toss, knee bend, trophy position, pronation, and follow-through — must all synchronize in under a second. Put in that work and you'll have a shot no opponent can prepare for.

Key Fundamentals

01

Continental Grip

Non-negotiable. The Continental grip — holding the racquet like a hammer, with the base knuckle on bevel 2 — is the foundation of every effective serve. It enables flat, topspin/kick, and slice serves from the same grip, and allows your forearm to pronate naturally through contact.

02

Consistent Toss

The toss is the foundation everything else is built on. For a flat serve, toss slightly in front of your hitting shoulder. For a kick serve, toss more over your head. The ball should reach exactly the right height so you contact it at full arm extension — practice the toss as a standalone drill until it's automatic.

03

Trophy Position

The "trophy position" is the brief moment before the swing begins — racquet behind your head, arm reaching upward, weight loaded in your legs. Achieving a clean trophy position is the single biggest predictor of a reliable serve. From here, the swing flows naturally in a kinetic chain.

04

Knee Bend & Leg Drive

Bending your knees loads energy into your legs. As you swing upward, extend through your legs, hips, shoulder, and arm in sequence — this kinetic chain is what generates pace without straining your shoulder. Serving flat-footed caps your speed ceiling at the arm alone.

05

Pronation

As you contact the ball, your forearm rotates inward (pronates). This snap is what drives pace into a flat serve and cuts across the ball for a slice. For a topspin/kick serve, brush upward and across the ball. Pronation separates a beginner push-serve from a pro-level weapon.

Common Mistakes

Wrong grip

Using an Eastern forehand grip on the serve seems intuitive at first, but it severely limits your spin options and puts enormous strain on your shoulder over time. Commit to the Continental grip early — it will feel awkward for a few weeks, but it's the only path to a complete serve.

Inconsistent toss

If the toss is in the wrong place, every other part of your serve compensates and breaks down. Many players' serve problems are toss problems in disguise. Practice 20 tosses before every session — just the toss, without swinging — until it lands in exactly the right spot.

No leg drive

Standing flat-footed and pushing the ball over with your arm caps your pace, creates inconsistency, and puts your shoulder at injury risk. Bend your knees, load your weight, and drive upward through the serve — the legs are the engine, the arm is just the last link in the chain.
